Cabalgó el señor de los Nazgûl por debajo del umbral que ningún enemigo había atravesado aún, mientras todos huían a su paso. Todos excepto uno; esperando en silencio, sereno, en el espacio antes de la puerta, montaba Gandalf sobre Mantogrís, aguantando el horror, inmóvil, impávido, cual si fuera una estatua tallada en Rath Dínen, único entre los corceles que aún trotaban libres sobre la tierra.

Y así, alzó por todo lo alto su espada, y la hoja llameaba. Gandalf no retrocedió. Pero en ese preciso momento, lejos, en algún jardín de la Ciudad, un gallo cantó. Era un canto límpido, que no respondía ni a la magia ni a la guerra, sino que recibía al amanecer en el cielo amplio, que se anunciaba sobre las penumbras de la muerte. Y, como si le respondiera, otro sonido se escuchó a lo lejos. Cuernos. Cuernos. Cuernos. En las laderas del sombrío Mindolluin resonaron sus ecos: el soplido de indómitos cuernos del Norte. Al fin habían llegado los de Rohan.
